Permitting and NS Power Interconnection, Handled For You
Every residential solar install in Nova Scotia needs a municipal building permit and an NS Power interconnection application before the system can legally go live. Requirements vary slightly by municipality, HRM, the Municipality of Lunenburg, CBRM, and others each run their own permit office with different processing timelines, but the core documentation is similar: electrical drawings, a structural assessment of the roof, and equipment specifications for the panels and inverters.
We handle both applications directly rather than leaving the paperwork to the homeowner. That includes submitting the building permit application to your local jurisdiction, preparing the NS Power interconnection request with the required single-line electrical diagram, and coordinating the final utility inspection once installation is complete. NS Power's interconnection review typically takes two to four weeks depending on their current application volume, which is usually the longest single step in the overall project timeline, longer than the installation itself.
Once NS Power approves the interconnection and the local building inspector signs off, your system is legally authorized to export power to the grid and start earning net metering credits. We do not consider a project complete until both approvals are in hand and your monitoring dashboard is live.
How We Size Your System
System size is the single biggest driver of both cost and savings, and it is also the easiest thing for a fly-by-night quote to get wrong. We size every residential system against 12 months of actual NS Power billing history, not a rough square-footage estimate or a satellite-only guess. That means pulling your usage in kWh for each month, factoring in whether you run a heat pump, electric water heater, or EV charger, and matching the array to what your household actually consumes.
Most Nova Scotia homes we quote land somewhere between 6 kW and 12 kW. A smaller household on standard electric baseboard heat with a $150 to $180 monthly NS Power bill typically needs 5 to 7 kW to hit a strong offset percentage. Add a heat pump and an EV, and that number often climbs to 9 to 12 kW to keep pace with the higher usage. Oversizing past your actual consumption does not help, since NS Power's net metering credits expire after 12 months if unused, so we design toward your real number rather than the roof's absolute maximum capacity.
Roof orientation and shading adjust the math further. A clean south-facing roof with no tree cover can produce meaningfully more per kW installed than a partially shaded east or west-facing roof of the same size, which is why two homes with identical usage can end up with different quoted system sizes.

Every residential system comes with manufacturer coverage stacked on top of our own workmanship warranty. Panels typically carry a 30-year linear performance warranty, microinverters run 20 to 25 years, and racking hardware is covered for 20 years, all backed by our own installation warranty covering the labour and workmanship on top of what the manufacturers guarantee.
Ongoing maintenance is minimal. Nova Scotia's rain generally keeps panels clean without manual washing, and the monitoring dashboard flags any production drop that might indicate a fault before it becomes a bigger issue.
